I went through my past posts on Engage With Grace and salvaged this quote from 2012:

“If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” – Steve Jobs

…and it wasn’t until this year, 2016, that I’ve grown up (a little) and completed these:

  • District of Columbia Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care
  • District of Columbia Declaration (living will)
  • Living Revocable Trust

I have found that sometimes people don’t want to engage in the conversations that go along with these, which I respect.

I want to control my death destiny as much as I want to control my life destiny, though. This process and these documents help with that. Otherwise, the conversation is going to happen without my participation, which won’t be helpful for anyone.

2008, when Engage with Grace started, was a long time ago – clearly monitor sizes were smaller – the original Engage With Grace slide is 720 pixels (I refreshed it with a 1600 pixel version for this year). And sadly, the process of doing this paperwork-wise is no easier than it was in 2008.

Startups have come and gone in this space, however Alex Drane (@Adrane) is still around, and I still hear the echo of Suze Orman (@SuzeOrmanShow) automatically failing callers on their future planning for not having a living revocable trust. So with a jumble of PDFs, notaries, and people attesting to things, it’s almost done. You can do it too, by starting with Engage with Grace yourself, as well as a plethora of websites and people that will help with advance directives and living revocable trusts depending on your situation.

It’s a gift to the future, beyond the future that I live in, and a good accomplishment on my adult checklist, for the parts of me that wish to be an adult 🙂 .
