In my world, flags have always been powerful symbols, typically of existence and acceptance (see: Photo Friday: The remarkable power of flags to create a culture of acceptance. This week they are a powerful symbol of unfathomable loss.

We lost 100,000 humans in the first 10 years of the HIV epidemic.
