Thanks for publishing my photograph, @FastCompany. We’ve come a long way since this was taken, in 2013.

The photograph was taken during a magical moment (in my opinion), when I got to sit (after walking) with Jeff Olson, one of the creators of bikeshare, and reflect with him on what he had done.

I wrote a post about it here:

A Walk Through New York – Designed to Move – is this our 1968 moment in creating active cities?

It’s 5 years later. I was right and I was wrong.

I was right, this was a turning point in how we design our environments, from thinking of two modes to a third mode of transportation (and Jeff wrote a book about this: Just Read: The Third Mode: Toward a Green Society, (how engineers impact our health as much as doctors))

I was wrong, this was not the only, or maybe most important transformation that was going to take place. We find ourselves now in the era of diabetes reversal and remission, undoing what was done a generation ago with our food supply.

I am applauding the much needed focus on equity in transportation.

I am hopeful to see a focus on equity in overall health. The data shows there has been harm distributed equitably across the population, in un-equitable proportions.

This century continues to dazzle.

As New York City rolls out a plan to offer $5 monthly Citi Bike memberships to SNAP recipients, it should also ensure that low-income residents have easy access to bikeshare stations and safe, quality infrastructure.
