Thanks for Publishing my Photo in, Another business is closing at The Shay. Is North End Shaw over? – Greater Greater Washington (Bigger question from the photo – is the planet over?)

Thanks again for publishing one of my photographs, @ggwash.

The photograph is of the rapidly changing Shaw neighborhood, which has had entire books written about it. Because Washington, DC is the learning lab for humanity.

Speaking of learning, the photograph is an important harbinger of our planet’s health. It was taken in December, 2015, the warmest December in Washington, DC history:

“This year is expected to be the first year in which global average surface temperatures are at least 1 degree Celsius, or 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, above average, meaning that the world is already halfway to the 2-degree Celsius, or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, global warming target, and even closer to a more stringent 1.5-degree target mentioned in the recently negotiated Paris Agreement.” – mashable.com/2015/12/24/record-warm-christmas-temp-tracker/

That was in 2015. Washington, DC has not cooled off. I previously plotted temperature and rainfall for our city, where you can see clear trends.

The Shaw location of Glen’s Garden Market is closing after a little more than two years nestled in The Shay, a new mixed-use development. The locavore grocery is not alone. Over the past year there has been a series of retail closures there, leaving many to wonder about the utility of “rebranding” neighborhoods.
