Thanks for using this photograph, taken in 2013, to illustrate this piece written by Harper Jean Tobin, JD, MSSA, Director of Policy for the National Center for Transgender Equality (@TransEquality).

I’d like to add a few things from my own experience.

  1. The medical profession tried this before. It didn’t work, in a devastating way.

  2. A profession already challenged with burnout from not being able to perform well for its patients is not going to find greater satisfaction from performing even less well for them.

  3. Because of #1 and #2 above, my generation of physicians came to health care to change everything. We like this century, the 20th Century is really not worth going back to.
