Thanks for publishing several of my photographs, @DailyDot, in this very insightful piece by Ana Valens (@SpaceDoctorPhD).

I very much identify with the content. I often find myself in professional settings where language related to transgender people is used in unflattering, micro-aggressive, and ultimately unhealthy way. Valens introduces us to the term “transmisia” : “prejudice plus power, because transgender people are systemically discriminated against through institutional power that then filters down into their everyday lives.”

These actions undermine the work of so many working to improve health, and it’s why I am vigilant, to the point where I am on the receiving end of the attacks myself. I consider it an honor to work to be an ally like this. I am a member of the generation of physicians who came to health care to change everything, which we are šŸ™‚ .

As a little background on the situations I encounter, I wrote this blog post over the summer: Beyond walking in parades with us, things Iā€™d like you to do to produce health for LGBTQ humans

Thanks again to DailyDot for being an exemplar media organization when it comes to accurate language. Accuracy is better for health.

Transgender men, women, and non-binary people are targeted regularly in schools and workplaces. Challenging microaggressions can end institutional violence.Source: Ending Anti-Trans Violence Begins With Trans Rights in Everyday Life
