Thanks again for publishing my photograph, @ggwash, in this follow-up article about Washington, DC’s TOPA (Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act) dialogue.

The photograph itself is taken at the intersection of 14th Street NW and U Street, NW, the location of the Reeves’ Center commissioned by Mayor Marion Barry and also the site that ignited the riots that destroyed Washington, DC in 1968. I admit that my camera is a little underpowered to capture sunsets, but life is one big experiment anyway.

The article itself, written by community colleague Jon Steingart (@jonsteingart) is really helpful in understanding the nuances of policies like this, in one of the (if not the) most protective cities of human accomplishment in the United States. It swayed my thinking. See what you think.

Advocates continue to debate new TOPA legislation. Some say the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act, or TOPA, lets tenants demand a payout in exchange for allowing a home sale to proceed. Others say it’s a tool for protecting renters and affordable housing that shouldn’t be weakened. Source: Should TOPA rights be scaled back for renters in single-family homes?
