This week’s photograph was taken in front of the Duke Ellington Statue, entitled “Encore,” in front of the about-to-be-redeveloped Duke Ellington Plaza. The statue was installed in 2012 and the Plaza will be undergoing a significant transformation.

This photographs and others in this group show evidence that “improvements” are not evenly distributed across the population here. I just finished reading Derek Hyra’s (@DerekHyra) book on the topic (Race, Class, and Politics in the Cappuccino City) and will post on it soon. It gives much to think about.

When it comes to statues, Washington, DC is more of a Duke Ellington type of place, anyway. Down the street a little there’s a touch of Michelle and Barack as well, thanks to the brilliant muralist @AniekanReloaded.

Enjoy.
