Thanks for using my photo in Gentrification in Shaw isn’t so black and white

Thanks for publishing my photo, Greater Greater Washington (@ggwash) and Kristin Jeffers (@blackurbanist). I took it in 2014, one camera ago, when Shaw was just becoming a place to be. Here’s a photograph of that corner that I took in 2012:

It’s the human tendency to take photographs of the healthy appearing parts of a city, it’s differentiating to take ones of the less healthy parts, and those are the most interesting in retrospect.

Good discussion in the comments of this post about what’s happening in Shaw. I have put in a request at my local library for a copy of Derek Hyra’s book ( love the library ).

Shaw may not be the heart of Chocolate City anymore, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for people of color. In fact, there may actually be more chances to build community here.
