Photo Friday: Doctors need to do green screen, too

Filming in front of a green screen, somewhere in Maryland…

This week’s slightly-out-of-focus photograph was taken by Kaiser Permanente colleague Trish Doherty ( @trishdoherty ), who is coordinating the filming of several physicians, patients, and health care leaders as part of the expansion of Kaiser Permanente’s physical presence in Washington, DC, in 2011 (watch for it!).

This week I went from the very low production value It Gets Better video that I co-created, to this much more polished piece of work. Both situations speak to the need, in my opinion, for all physicians to be good communicators, inside and outside of the exam room. As I have mentioned on this blog several times, I often meet brilliant and talented innovators in health care who simply aren’t incented to communicate their work because of the requirements of peer-review, or because this isn’t training that’s part of medical education, which is a loss for everyone. If you have the chance to learn from professional communicators in your life, take advantage, you’ll be glad you did.

By the way, I am actually way more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it. With that in mind, I didn’t want to leave before turning the camera on one of my most excellent teachers, Holly Potter ( @htpotter ). The people who work so hard to present others’ talents to the world deserve to have their talents presented, too. It’s only fair :).
