Exploring determinants of a healthy city with Ruben Castaneda and Brianne Nadeau, Washington, DC USA

Ruben Castaneda Reading - S Street Rising 55186

I was fortunate to meet the author of the very captivating book, S Street Rising (see my review of it here: Just Read: S Street Rising: Crack, Murder, and Redemption in D.C.), Ruben Castaneda (@RCastanedaWP) as well as Washington, DC’s Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeu (@BrianneKNadeau) in a discussion of the book, our history, and our future in the nation’s capital.

Ruben’s story describes parts of Washington, DC that barely resemble themselves any more, from a place without hope to a place that is booming in parts. This is also creating a crisis in affordable housing and livability for many.

I have been curious for a long time about how a city manages both phenomena. The way to provide affordable housing, Brianna told us, is to preserve it first, because building new will never keep up with the demand. She is also working to support the housing production trust fund in Washington, which you can read about here.

And all of this in the backdrop of The Coupe DC (@TheCoupeDC), which is itself pioneering the future with beautiful multistall gender neutral restrooms (see my last post: Innovation, Respect, Safety, Beauty: Multistall gender neutral bathrooms at The Coupe DC | Ted Eytan, MD)

Innovation every where you turn in our nation’s capital…thanks for spending some time with an inquistive practitioner of total health – there are so many things that a journalist, an elected leader, members of the community can do that doctors can’t to improve health. The future is working together.
